1. Back Up All Data

The more places you store your data, the less risk there is of a total loss. At a minimum, store files in at least two places. One should be on your physical computer and home server, while the other should ideally be in a cloud service, which stores data securely on the internet. 

All important data should be backed up at least once a week, though every 24 hours is preferable. A computer service professional can implement solutions to back up data automatically, which will save you considerable time and hassle.

2. Encrypt Sensitive Data

Encryption translates data into another form that can only be unlocked and read by people with specific security keys. Encryption keeps your information safe by essentially stopping a security breach from becoming a data breach, as unauthorized persons can't unlock or use the data in any way. All data kept on a server or in the cloud should be encrypted, as well as when it's in transit.

3. Install an Anti-Virus Program

Data can be lost through any number of security breaches, including phishing, ransomware, and worms. You can protect yourself with a comprehensive anti-virus program. Be sure to keep the program regularly updated to ensure the highest levels of protection.

4. Use Good Password Practices

Passwords should be as strong as possible to prevent security issues and potential data losses. Use a combination of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Change passwords at least once every 90 days, and encourage others in your home or office to do the same.
